At some point, every woman has experienced the supremely irritating sensation of an ill-fitting pair of panties. It’s all you can think about, and for many of us – it ruins the day.
Conversely, every woman has experienced the confidence and comfort of wearing a pair of underwear that seems like it was made just for you.
Look, the reality is, it’s all about preference. Bras and other forms of women’s lingerie require measurements. Choosing panties is a matter of trial and error.
Keep reading for a comprehensive list of popular panty styles, cuts, and how to determine which ones are right for you!
Popular Styles Of Underwear
- Briefs: These are the OG’s. Often referred to as granny panties, brief-style underwear sits at the belly button and provides full cheek coverage. Often sold in packs at your local department store, these little grannies are a monthly staple for every woman’s closet despite their fuddy-duddy reputation.
- Hi-cut Briefs: Often also referred to as French Cut, these are the cooler older sister of the brief. They still provide full cheek coverage and sit at the belly button, but the leg openings are cut higher so that more of the hips are exposed. How much hip exposure depends on the brand.
- Boyshorts: Boyshorts are the Cool Girl™ of the popular panty lineup. They can shotgun a beer while applying mascara. Boyshorts sit just below the belly button and are aptly named for their resemblance to men’s underwear. Leg openings are very low cut and cheek coverage is less than briefs, but more than thongs and hipsters.
- Hipsters: Hipsters have next to no torso coverage, and about half cheek coverage. Leg openings are again quite low, and these are often found in dedicated lingerie stores rather than your traditional department store.
- Thongs: Thongs, of course, need next to no introduction. Thongs can sit either high or low on the torso. They start as a triangle and slowly morph into a thin strip of fabric that covers just those parts of the rear, with no cheek coverage. These little ladies are great for dresses, sheer pants, and other outfits that require fewer underwear lines and more sexiness.
- G-string: G-strings are the baddest girls in the women’s underwear game. Very similar in shape to thongs, yet the strip on the rear is not a strip but a string. Also excellent for form-fitting clothing and often are featured as a pair to sexy lingerie sets.
Choosing The Right Pair Of Panties
When it comes to choosing panties, keep these considerations top of mind:
- What will you wear with them? Being aware of what you’ll be wearing with them is crucial as well. For example, g-strings and thongs are notoriously difficult to pair with jeans but go well with a bodycon dress or sheer pants.
- How long will you wear them? Okay, this is a substantial deciding factor. Where will you be wearing this little g-string? To an hours-long funeral? A hike? Maybe not your best bet. Try a brief or a boyshort instead.
- Are they comfortable? Perhaps the biggest point of consideration. Depending on your body type, you may prefer the loosey-goosey feel of thongs vs. the security of a brief or hipster.
Fabrics are important as well. If you’re on your period, a cotton panty with plenty of coverage that isn’t too tight is your best bet for staying comfy during those trying times.
Pro-tip number one: if you’re unsure how some of these panties fit, try ordering a bulk variety set on Amazon. Alternatively, most lingerie retailers have special deals when you buy 5 or 6 pairs. Mix and match, and see what you like best!
Pro-tip number two: Keep in mind that changing up your underwear collection, throwing out sizes that don’t fit anymore, and discarding older pairs are all expressions of self love!
