For an amateur, posing for any kind of photoshoot can be overwhelming! Who wants to be perceived, anyway? Throw in a sexy boudoir theme and it can be downright nerve-wracking.
Boudoir shoots can be an empowering, enjoyable experience. The photos are often included as part of a gift for a lover or just for your own enjoyment.
If you have a shoot upcoming, you’re likely after some practical tips on not only just surviving, but enjoying your boudoir photoshoot experience. Let’s get started!
Look For An Experienced Photographer
Anyone can pick up an iPhone 12 these days and call themselves a photographer, and these are wonderful aspirations, but let’s be realistic.
Use Google reviews, Yelp, and social media to find a professional. Ask friends to see if they have recommendations. Most importantly, find a photographer who has experience in boudoir photography.
Many professionals make it their entire niche and will be experienced in making you comfortable and finding the best shot.
Remember, you’re paying for this service – so make sure you get your money’s worth!
Eat And Drink Mindfully
Let’s clarify something here – do not starve yourself. We don’t mean restrict your calorie intake, we mean be discerning with what you eat in the interest of how it will make you feel!
In the days leading up to your session, eat foods that make you feel good and won’t irritate your digestive tract. For example, if you avoid gluten – don’t eat a hoagie on a giant Kaiser roll.
The same goes for beverages. When consumed in moderation, alcohol is a great way to loosen up – it’s not uncommon for boudoir clients to consume an ounce of their favorite liquor or enjoy a light mixed drink before their session. Don’t overdo it, though. There’s only so much editing a photographer can do!
Be Strategic
This is a broad tip that encompasses a few areas:
- Plan your appointment around your cycle. The best time for a boudoir photo will be around Ovulation. As estrogen peaks, you’ll feel creative, sensual, and confident. Not to mention, your skin will be at its best and your breasts the perkiest!
Avoid booking your appointment during the final stages of the Luteal Phase (onset of PMS) or during your period. Low estrogen and progesterone may cause acne, bloating, and overall fatigue. Not ideal for a sexy shoot!
- Plan hair removal carefully. The photography pros at Beauty & Boudoir Studio recommend that you book your waxing appointments at least 1 to 2 days before your appointment. Waxing can cause irritation and redness, so if you’re in a time crunch – try dermaplaning with a clean eyebrow razor.
- Primp! The week if your appointment is prime time for freshening up your hair, buying some fresh makeup, and splurging on a manicure and pedicure. Remember, it’s about feeling good! It’s an experience of self-care to prepare for a photo shoot.
Prep Your Wardrobe
Of course, while your photographer will provide their expertise and consultation, you’ll be in charge of what you wear!
Here are a few key wardrobe takeaways:
- Take extras! We mean extras of everything. Comfy clothing, lingerie options, tights, heels, makeup, and wipes. Put it in a tote bag or a small suitcase – extra is always better in this case.
- Be comfortable. On the way to your shooting location – just wear those sweatpants and that oversized sweater. Corsets and basques are not the most comfortable. Extended wear while commuting will only leave imprints and may cause mild inflammation.
- Prep your outfits. This is a significant takeaway, if nothing else. Dedicate a couple of hours a few days before your session to plan your outfits. Do you want lingerie sets? Corsets? Robes? Nude shots? Go shopping!
Have a plan in place. It will help your photographer do their best work and ensure you feel great about the process!
