Garter belts and corsets are great. But there is so much more to vintage lingerie than these two timeless pieces. The vintage lingerie pieces here have had their moment and have since been outshined. But these pieces are far too chic to collect dust and it’s time for their comeback.
Dramatic and Fabulous Robes
Every 70s film had a damsel running down the stairs with a long, luxurious robe effortlessly trailing behind her. But before the big, feather-dressed bell sleeves, was the satin and silk robe perfectly tailored to the 40s housewife to lounge around in while sipping her evening martini.
With many working from home, the dramatic and fabulous robes of the past need to make a comeback. Do your hair and makeup to the nines then drape yourself in a vintage cloak for effortless vintage class and fashion. Robes are suitable for all ages and every body type.
Long Silk Night Gowns
Speaking of lounging in style, long silk nightgowns are a thing of the past, now replaced primarily with cotton pajamas–um, what? Where did we go wrong? Silk nightgowns are lightweight, great for the skin, and can turn a tired look into mid-century royalty.
Straight from a fairytale, silk nightgowns can come in spaghetti straps, with lace trim, short sleeves, and in a matching set with a robe. The drape over the body with elegance.
Mini Bloomers
These cute puffer panties are a dainty addition to your underwear collection and are as cute as can be. Offered in nude and pastels, these vintage classics come with adorable details including bows, ribbon, and ruffles.
Short bloomers are loose-fitting, high-waisted, and comfortable. Cute for cuddles and comfy enough for a cozy night’s rest.
Nudes
Modern lingerie is fabulous and full of color but the simplistic skin tone nudes of times past are due for a comeback. Monotone tans, creams, off-weights, beige, and deep nudes are classy and elegant and when paired perfectly, melt right into your own flesh tones making it a mystery of where your skin stops and the lingerie begins.
Soft, nude color tones don’t distract from your natural beauty but elegantly accentuate the feminine shape. Nude lingerie also pops with details, as every bit of lace, string, bows, or designs added, stand out more.
Slip Dress
The slip dress is the easiest (and perhaps classiest) way to show off your lingerie. Innerwear becomes outerwear when you pair the slip dress with heels and a coat and draped with pearls.
The slip dress is lightweight, breathable, and versatile. It can serve as date night attire, be dressed down with a pair of sneakers for a casual day out, or layered with other lingerie like a corset, pantyhose, or bralette.
Half Slip
Similar to the slip dress, the half slip can easily become outerwear and serve as a lightweight skirt. But their vintage functionality makes them a real gem. By smoothing out the outer skirt, half-slips look, feel, and wear better.
It can be bad news if a skirt gets stuck when you get up, and this happens more often than we’d care to admit. A half slip can help prevent this tragic fashion faux pas.
Cone Bra
We’re kidding. But that would be kind of iconic, albeit short-lived.
Print Pajamas
Who doesn’t love a matching PJ set? Polka dots are a timeless pattern. Before, stripes ruled the PJ set show, but polka dots became the feminine alternative to stripes in the late 20s.
Another popular print that’s due for a return is animal print PJs. The print will always be in.
Lace Everything
There was the decade that loved lace and then the generation that tried to erase it. It’s time for a compromise. A little lace is cute but– head to toe!? Honestly, I think we’re ready for it. Lace bodysuit, lace gloves, lace choker. Give the people all the lace lingerie they can handle!
Balconette Bras
Much cuter than your favorite crop top or boob tube is the sexy but chic balconette bra. Where beneath your favorite button-down or in place of a top. This vintage lingerie makes the boobies sit pretty and is often detailed with a touch of lace, ruffle, caged strapping or you can get on toned down.
The balconette bra comes in all different styles, patterns, and colors and is guaranteed to give you a gorgeous silhouette.
Babydoll Lingerie
Ah, memories of a time more innocent. The innocence may be long gone but we don’t have to ditch the cute lingerie that came with it! Babydoll lingerie is sassy and sweet and compliments all body types. A fitted bust, shapeless camis, and matching panties or shorts–comfy and classic.
Babydoll lingerie can be found in sheer silk chiffon, embroidered lace, see-through, full- coverage, and everything in between. Babydoll lingerie is also known for its subtle and stylish details including bows, ribbons, lace, and fringe.
Bodysuits
A bodysuit or bodystocking is far too versatile to ever go out of style. The bodystocking went from an 1800’s theater prop so actors could create the illusion of nudity for particular scenes. What was once a sheer undergarment meant to preserve an actor’s modesty, is ready to be turned into a lingerie staple piece that can be worn inside and outside of the bedroom.
Conclusion
Vintage lingerie statement pieces aren’t always the most comfortable. But the ones we’re bringing back are a sexy exception–especially the bodysuit. Effortlessly hugging the body, they often offer gentle stretch so you never feel restricted or restrained. From a sheer, pantyhose feel, to cotton, lace, nylon, lycra, spandex, or fishnet–bodystockings are always designed with the wearer in mind.
We love classic vintage lingerie that has stuck around decade after decade. But its time to give the spotlight to these lesser-known, but equally definitive pieces.
